Phragmites Control Workshops
Go to our events page at

for dates and locations of upcoming workshops
Workshops are generally offered May through August.
We are available to present a Phragmites Control Workshop anytime of the year for your group at your location.
Phragmites is the common reed plant which has taken over so much of Harsens Island in the last 30 years. It out competes the native plants and creates a monoculture of reeds. It reduces the biodiversity of plants and therefore the biodiversity of animal life on the island. If you are ready to fight back come to one of our free workshops at Stewart Farm for information on what you can do on your property to get rid of phragmites. The workshop usually lasts about two hours. We visit the spots at Stewart Farm where we have been successful in reducing the phragmites and you will receive information on what equipment and chemicals are used as well as the timing required and application procedure options. During the workshop we will see a demonstration of the preparation and treatment process.
A report on some past
Phragmites Workshops

On Saturday, September 1, 2007 we did our first phragmites control workshop
on Harsens Island. It was a great success with 80 to 85 participants. To provide
this material to all the people who couldn't come on Labor Day weekend we
held a second workshop on September 29 and had 27 attendees. We talked about
what people can do on their own property to begin the battle against phragmites.
We visited the spots at Stewart Farm where we have been successful in reducing
the phragmites and distributed information on what equipment and chemicals
are used as well as the timing required and application procedure options.
During the workshop there was a demonstration of the preparation and treatment
process. It was agreed that we all have a lot still to learn about the subject
and it was suggested that we not only have additional beginner workshops but
also that we conduct separate related workshops on subjects such as permits,
safe herbicide use, equipment options for herbicide treatments and using native
plants to replace phragmites. If you would be interested in attending a beginner's
workshop or any of these topics or have ideas for others related to phragmites
control please express your specific interests to Bob Williams Bob@StewartFarm.org
or Chuck Miller at 810-748-7290.
Note: We do not consider reading the handouts a substitute for attending a workshop where you can see and hear all of the details of this subject. In addition, being able to clarify any questions you have about the materials provided can be very important in making sure the work is done safely, properly and that the results will be rewarding. We intend to conduct future workshops to meet the demand. Please let us know if you are interested. There is no charge for these workshops.
