Phragmites is the common reed which has taken over many of our natural areas.
It outcompetes native plants and creates a monoculture. Topics include how
to identify phragmites, native phragmites vs. non-native phragmites, and its
biology and distribution. Methods of control will also be discussed, including
herbicide treatments, techniques, and the permit process.
Bob Williams- Bob has been successful at controlling Phragmites in his restoration
of a lakeplain prairie at Stewart Farm. He is an MSU Extension Service Volunteer
and the founder and webmaster of www.Phragmites.org and www.Phragmites.info.
On this topic, Bob has presented a half dozen public workshops and in-field
trainings and has done personal tutoring to more than a hundred individuals.
Ellen Kohler- Ellen Kohler has been an attorney for 16 years, specializing
in natural resources, environmental and land use law. She holds a Master's
degree from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment,
and a law degree from the University of Colorado. After working as a trial
attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources
Division, on wildlife matters, she moved to northern Michigan and began working
in private practice. Ellen is the author of A Citizen's Guide to Water Quality
Permitting: Understanding the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
(NPDES) Program and its Role in Michigan and co-author of What is a Taking?
Exploring the Boundary Between Public Interest and Private Property. She served
on the board for the Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay for four years. She
works on a contract basis for the Watershed Center on policy and legal matters.
Lisa Brush - Executive Director, Stewardship Network. Lisa has worked in
the environmental field in Michigan for the last fifteen years. She is currently
the Executive Director of the Stewardship Network and has been involved with
the Network since its inception more than 10 years ago. She has a wealth of
experience helping non-scientific people understand scientific issues. For
over nine years, as she has built and coordinated the Stewardship Network,
she has emphasized effective and meaningful stakeholder involvement in developing
and implementing all aspects of this program. She has a M.S. in Natural Resources
from the University of Michigan and a B.A. (Science in Society) from Wesleyan
University.
