host a free workshop on September 17th called "World Wide Weeds in Your
Neighborhood." Invasive species and how property owners can eradicate
them will be the focus of a program which will be held from 9 a.m. until 1

on the 10 most abundant weeds that threaten to take over open meadows, forests,
wetlands or shoreline. Tricks and tools of the trade for invasive weed control
will also be discussed. Attendees will learn about volunteer opportunities
that can give them hands-on experience for tackling removal of invasives on
their own land.
"This program is great for everyone from the backyard gardener to the
landowner who owns 40 acres or more," says the Conservancy's Stewardship

This may be the perfect week to treat your Phragmites
At this time, the weather prediction for South East Michigan for tomorrow
through Sunday is for NO RAIN. I guess it all fell out of the sky during the
past two days. This may be the perfect week to treat your Phragmites with
herbicide. If possible we should get it done by the end of September.
I noticed this weekend some untreated Phragmites starting to turn yellow. I hope we are not having an early move into dormancy for the season.
On the day you decide to spray be sure to check the wind conditions. Do not spray into the wind. However, you can use the wind at your back to carry the herbicide further into a tall dense stand. Remember, Phragmites control herbicide will kill most other plants too. Be careful to avoid drift into other areas. There is usually less wind in the early morning.
PS - Welcome to all of our new newsletter subscribers who signed up this weekend on Harsens Island.

Is Phragmites used by any animals?
I am often asked if there are any animals which uses Phragmites. Here's a
quote from a recent article available at http://www.mvtimes.com/2008/08/14/calendar/wild-side.php
"Another mode of establishment is illustrated by the broad-winged skipper,
an inch-long, orange-and-brown butterfly that was formerly restricted to wetlands
of the Southeast. But one of the plants its caterpillars use for food happens
to be Phragmites, the tall, invasive grass whose feathery seed heads dominate
portions of some Island pond shorelines. As the invasive strain of Phragmites
marched north along the coast in recent decades, the broad-winged skipper
expanded along with its essential resource, making it to the Vineyard by 1995
or so."

Possible Harrison Twp. Treatment of Lake St. Clair Phragmites
From an article in The Detroit News of August 21, 2008
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080821/METRO03/808210358/1412/METRO03
"Harrison Twp.: Weed control OK slated
For years, residents on the shores of Lake St. Clair and along the canals
leading to it have complained about the growth of phragmites, the tall weeds
that hug the shoreline and clog boat traffic. Now, help may be on the way.
On Monday, the township's trustees are expected to approve a $3,900 phragmite
control program that could include spraying to kill vegetation. The meeting
will be at 7:30 p.m. at Rosso Memorial Hall, 38255 L'Anse Creuse Road. "
Let's hope this starts a trend among local units of government.
